Library book club gathering Monday
The Kona Library Book Club will meet at 11 a.m. Monday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library to discuss “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore,” by Robin Sloan.
The novel features a hero left jobless by the recession who finds work as a clerk in a store that is more than it seems.
The meeting includes light refreshments. New members are welcome.
The book for April is “Home,” by Toni Morrison.
String music demonstration
slated for Monday
Magic Strings will present an educational program including pieces by Bach, Mozart and Handel at 5:30 p.m. today at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
The group features Ursula Vietze and Madeline Schatz on violin, Joel Gimpel on viola and Julie Salis on cello.
This free public program is sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, Kona.

Seniors plan movie
day on Tuesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors will have a movie day at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Attendees will watch “Love Never Dies.” Check in at the information desk for room location.
There is no meeting at Hale Halawai Tuesday.

Prostate cancer support group
meets on Tuesday
The Prostate Cancer Information and Support Group will hold a free meeting at noon Tuesday at the pool bar at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Newly diagnosed and prostate cancer survivors are welcome to share cancer-related issues and support each other.

Practical agriculture workshops offered
at farms in Hamakua
A series of agriculture workshops at farms along the Hamakua Coast will provide residents with hands-on training from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through April 20.
The regular adult rate per workshop is $25; $15 for students and seniors 60 and older.
Zach Gibson will teach “Hands-on Propagation” March 30 at Puuala Ranch, Honokaa. Attendees will learn propagation and care techniques for plants including kava, noni and vanilla.
Pupu will be served; participants will take home a plant.
Lyn Howe and Elizabeth Mallion will share “Hands-on Seed Saving” April 6 in Paauilo Makai. They will discuss how to collect, process and store seeds. Tips and demonstrations for seeds, including papaya, lilikoi and beans will be offered.
Participants will take home a variety of locally grown seeds.
Jenny Bach leads “A Glimpse Into Natural Beekeeping” April 13 at Bee Love Apiaries, Papaaloa. Registration is required; class size is limited to 12. Participants will enter beehives with experienced beekeepers, make hives and taste local honey. Protective suits will be supplied. Wear closed-toe shoes, long-sleeve shirt and pants.
Walker Sanders discusses “Natural Pest Management” April 20 in Paauilo Makai. Sanders will demonstrate how to handle garden pests such as fruit flies, rats and mealy bugs with natural solutions, as well as traps to bait ants and slugs.
